There were siren activations in your area this morning due to a severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan that had the “DESTRUCTIVE” threat tag associated with it. The designation was the result of reports of baseball-sized hail being associated with this system.
According to the National Weather Service, the criteria for a destructive damage threat is at least 2.75 inch diameter (baseball-sized) hail and/or 80 mph thunderstorm winds.
While Dane County’s outdoor warning sirens are activated primarily for tornado warnings, the system is set to also sound the sirens for areas impacted by severe thunderstorm warnings carrying the destructive tag. This is due to the danger these storms present to anyone caught outside in them from high winds or large hail.
