MADISON, Wis. — Halloween is a fang-tastic chance for little ghosts, super-heroes and princesses to wander around neighborhoods and collect treats. While it can be a spooktacular good time, there are also dangers both kids and parents should watch out for. ReadyWisconsin is offering the following tips to help make sure everyone has a trick-free Halloween: Know when to go. Since Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year, many communities are holding trick-or-treat times on the weekend. In addition, many businesses offer special trick-or-treat events. Check to see when the official times are for your area. Make sure children are supervised. Children under the age of 12 should not trick-or-treat alone, while children over the age of 12 should walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Trick-or-treaters should only go to well-lit homes and never accept rides from strangers. Make yourself seen. Both children and adults should hold a flashlight or a light stick while walking. Put reflective tape on costumes and bags to help drivers see you while walking along darkened streets. Check treats before eating. An adult should examine all candy and other treats to check for tampering, choking hazards and potential allergens. Do not eat homemade treats made by strangers. Avoid fire and safety hazards. Make sure costumes (including masks, beards and wigs) are flame resistant. Stay away from long trailing fabric to prevent falls and wear well-fitting masks to avoid blocked vision. You should also avoid using real candles to light up jack o’ lanterns. Instead, use a flashlight or battery-operated candle. Watch the roads. Drivers should be on the lookout for any trick-or-treaters walking on roadways, medians, and curbs. Know when people will be out in your community and drive with caution when going through neighborhoods. |
